The Lieberman Center Presents: In Dialogue with Jonathan Greenspun

The Senator Joseph Lieberman 鈥 Mitzner Center for Public Service and Advocacy 鈥淚n Dialogue With鈥 series continued Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025, with an open discussion with 成人视频色情片 graduate Jonathan Greenspun, managing director of Mercury, a public affairs firm that stands at the intersection of politics, government and media. The private meeting with the inaugural cohort of the Senator Joseph Lieberman-Mitzner Scholars was moderated by Scholar Benjamin Eidlisz.

Greenspun began the conversation by highlighting the work of his firm, explaining the difference between public affairs and public relations, and talking about a few of the political and lobbying campaigns he helped shape. He took the students on a trip down memory lane when he was a student at YU in the early 1990s. At the time, he was an intern for Rudy Giuliani and working on his mayoral campaign made him fall in love with politics 鈥 even with the long treks back to Rubin Hall after late nights in the office. He climbed his way up the political ladder, working for state and city officials, including Mayor Bill de Blasio and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, before transitioning to the private sector.

Greenspun then touched on professional paralysis and how many young students today don鈥檛 know where to start. He stressed that it is much more important to take the right steps rather than waiting for the perfect choice to present itself. He told the scholars they should take advantage of the time and energy the college years provide and volunteer in public service, which would give them both the skills and connections to find their professional passions.

Speaking about the late Senator Joseph Lieberman, Greenspun called him a 鈥渉ero of mine鈥 and an 鈥渋nspiration on how to be a Jew in politics.鈥 Talking about the importance of giving back to the community, Greenspun said that Lieberman was the 鈥済old standard for anyone who wants to aspire in public service.鈥 Using Lieberman as his example, he underlined to the scholars the centrality of giving back as the foundation of leading a successful and meaningful life. 鈥淒o not forget that our mission in life is to give back.鈥

The event concluded with Greenspun fielding a wide range of questions from the scholars, which touched on the politics of the Jewish community, tips on how to run for office and the differences between local and national politics.

Previous 鈥淚n Dialogue With鈥 series speakers include Hon. Clarine Nardi Riddle, former Attorney General of Connecticut and former chief of staff to Senator Lieberman himself, and Matthew Incantalupo, YU assistant professor of political science.
